A high-end laptop: a large screen and maximum configurations. This is a popular choice when the laptop completely replaces a desktop computer. Weight and size are a tradeoff here, and it's worth holding it in your hands before buying.

What's different about the 16" MacBook Pro?

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is Apple's largest laptop. It features a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with 3456 x 2234 pixels, 1000 nits across the entire display and up to 1600 nits at peak brightness, and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. It weighs 2.14 kg.

There's no base M5 in this size: the 16-inch model is built around the M5 Pro with 18 CPU cores and 20 GPU cores, or the M5 Max with 32 or 40 GPU cores. Both chips have three Thunderbolt 5 ports with speeds up to 120 Gbps, HDMI, an SDXC slot, and MagSafe 3.

The M5 Pro model's battery lasts up to 24 hours of video playback, while the M5 Max lasts up to 22 hours—two hours longer than the 14-inch Pro model with the same chip. In high-power mode, the fans spin faster, allowing the laptop to perform even more efficiently under the most demanding tasks.

It is chosen when a laptop replaces a desktop computer: for video editing and 3D.

What to choose: M5 Pro or M5 Max, 16″ or 14″

- M5 Pro. Apple targets developers and engineers. Memory ranges from 24 to 128 GB, supports up to three external monitors. - M5 Max. For 3D and AI modeling. Memory starts at 36 GB for the 32-core GPU version and 48 GB for the 40-core version, up to 128 GB. Supports up to four external monitors. - 16" or 14". The 14" is about half a kilogram lighter and comes with the base M5. The 16" is chosen for its screen and battery life, especially if the laptop rarely leaves the desk.

How much memory and storage should I buy?

Memory and storage are fixed after purchase, so configurations are planned for years to come. 24 GB is sufficient for development and editing; 48 GB and above are used for 3D scenes and local AI models.

Storage starts at 1 TB, and with the M5 Max, it goes up to 8 TB. Video projects quickly fill up 1 TB, so consider 2 TB for those.
