MacBook Pro 14″

A powerful tool for tasks where the Air can't handle anything: editing, graphics, compiling, and virtual machines. It's not just the chip that's different—the Pro has active cooling, so it can handle the workload for longer periods of time, rather than peaks. If that kind of workload only happens once a week, the extra cost won't be worth it.

What's different about the 14″ MacBook Pro?

The 14-inch MacBook Pro is the most compact Pro model and the only one available with the base M5 chip. It features a 14.2-inch display and weighs between 1.55 and 1.62 kg, depending on the chip.

The Liquid Retina XDR display maintains 1000 nits across the entire display and up to 1600 nits at its peak, with a ProMotion refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. For viewing in front of a window, there's a version with a nano-texture anti-glare coating.

The Pro has more ports than the Air: three Thunderbolt ports, HDMI, an SDXC slot, MagSafe 3, and a headphone jack. The battery lasts up to 24 hours of video playback on the M5 model, up to 22 hours on the M5 Pro, and up to 20 hours on the M5 Max. It's available in two colors: silver and space black.

Which chip to choose

- M5: 10 processor cores and 10 graphics cores, Thunderbolt 4, up to two external monitors. Apple targets it at students and aspiring creators. - M5 Pro: 15 or 18 processor cores, 16 or 20 graphics cores, Thunderbolt 5 with speeds up to 120 Gbps, up to three external monitors. Suitable for developers and engineers. - M5 Max: 18 processor cores, 32 or 40 graphics cores, up to four external monitors. It is chosen for 3D and working with AI models.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max feature a high-power mode, which runs the fans faster and allows the laptop to run faster under heavy loads.

How much memory and storage should I buy?

Memory and storage are selected along with the chip; they cannot be upgraded after purchase. The M5 comes with 16 to 32 GB of memory, while the M5 Pro and M5 Max come with up to 128 GB. Storage starts at 1 TB.

- 16 GB with the M5 is enough for photography and programming without virtual machines. - 24–36 GB is needed for video editing and container development. - 64 GB and more are needed for local AI models and heavy 3D. - 2 TB instead of 1 TB is worth getting if you have video projects on your laptop.

14″ or 16″, Pro or Air

- 14" or 16". The 16" weighs 2.14 kg and isn't included with the base M5. The 14" is about half a kilogram lighter and easier to carry around. - Pro or Air. The Air is lighter and fanless, making it suitable for school and office use. The Pro is better suited for long workloads or the XDR display.
